Beggs coach Rodney Tate was brought to tears last Friday night as the sign was revealed dedicating the Beggs High School football field as “Tate Field” in his honor.
Tate, a 1978 Beggs High School graduate, has coached at Beggs for the past 17 years. His tenure includes coaching football, track and cross country athletes.
His guidance helped make many Beggs athletes not only better athletes, but more well-rounded adults.
Tate was a member of the 1975 State Championship Beggs High School football team, as well as the 1977 State Runner-Up team.
Upon graduation, he was recruited by many colleges across the country. He chose to play for the University of Texas Longhorns as a running back.
In 1982, Tate was a 4th round draft pick by the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals.
His Bengals helmet is proudly displayed in a trophy case in the Beggs Dome.
